The New Bedford Armory: Inside One of the Southcoast's Most Haunted Buildings

Whaling City. That is what people call New Bedford, Massachusetts, back when its harbor sent ships around the world and its captains built mansions with the money that came home. New Bedford has also been ranked as the second most haunted city in Massachusetts, and this is my hometown.

New Bedford's Haunted History

Local paranormal investigators point to the city's whaling era wealth and its later industrial revolution history as the source of most of its reported activity. Fortunes were made and lost fast in New Bedford, and the same buildings that housed that wealth later housed factory workers, including children, living through some of the hardest conditions of the era. That kind of history tends to leave a mark.

The New Bedford Armory

The building most people point to first is the New Bedford Armory on Sycamore Street. Built in 1904 for the Massachusetts National Guard and expanded in 1935, the Armory operated for a century before closing in 2004 and sitting vacant for over a decade. Long before it closed, guardsmen stationed inside were already describing a black hooded figure moving through the shadows, an unseen force shoving people from behind, and heavy doors slamming shut with nobody near them.

What Ghost Hunters Found at the Armory

In 2004, a paranormal investigation crew from a nationally aired television show spent a night inside the Armory with cameras and audio equipment running. What happened to the crew's sound engineer that night, knocked backward hard enough to fall as if something had passed directly through the equipment operator, remains one of the most talked about moments connected to the building, years later.

The City of New Bedford purchased the Armory in 2022 for ten dollars, on the condition that the state fund several million dollars in structural repairs. The building is still standing. According to the reports, so is whatever else has been living inside it.

Whaling mansions across New Bedford carry similar stories: old money, old grief, and history that never settled.
